Metra prides itself on scientific integrity and all forecast data is continually monitored for forecast accuracy on a daily basis. Metra strives for excellence and forecast accuracy is at the forefront of all our operations.

Metra's core capability is based around computer modelling of key weather parameters that affect energy production or demand. In particular Metra specialises in the use of statistical techniques to improve forecast quality and provide meaningful, intuitive data solutions to energy and risk decision makers.

Metra utilises global model data and observational data not only to initialise the mesoscale models themselves, but also to statistically fine tune the mesoscale model output data to provide you with the most accurate forecast available.

Metra routinely optimises both the specific model parameterisation and the model grid resolution for each new mesoscale domain that we set up for clients.

Recent observations are then used to statistically fine tune the output of the mesoscale model, to more closely represent the specific local climatology and conditions. The benefit of this two-stage tuning of forecast information can be seen in the reduction in RMS errors and bias in the forecast values compared to observed conditions.

Innovation

Our commitment to innovation defines our energy sector product suite. Our systems developed over the past 3 years, use sophisticated, proprietry mathematical techniques to create forecast probability density functions (PDF's) based on multi-model inputs. The rich content of these PDF forecasts makes them an exceptional decision-making tool, representing the range and likelihood of occurance of different forecast outcomes.

In addition to our expertise in applied mathematics, Metra also has extensive experience in the graphical presentation of weather information. We have also designed and built a variety of graphical display tools for use by our own meteorologists in our New Zealand forecasting operation, and are a well-established supplier to the broadcast media sector with Weatherscape XT television weather graphics system.
