Verifications
Every customer uses weather forecast information in a unique way. Some customers may only be interested in how accurate tomorrow’s maximum temperature forecasts are, whereas another customer may want to know how frequently the atmospheric pressure is out by more than 2 hPa on a Day 4 forecast at 6 am local time. Still other customers may be most interested in the average temperatures for forecast days 6 to 10.
There are as many ways to measure forecast accuracy as there are customers. Each customer will have subtly different requirements for assessing what makes a good forecast. The best way to determine how good or how accurate a forecast is to first determine how the forecast is used, and what matters most to the customer when they make decisions based on that forecast.
Some customers will want the overall long term average error to be as low as possible. Other customers will want the long term average error.
